Embracing new talent.

Last Thursday I overheard a number of condescending comments on the sudden and rapid growth of the newspaper staff. The comments were few and I am sure that most did not share in the suggested opinions, but they were heard and not by few. Now I admit I am more than a little bias on this subject because a couple of my good friends have joined at the semester. However the fact remains that new talent is essential to any organization that wishes to be diverse and innovative. Putting down this talent on the contingency that you’re a sophomore,” is stifling the new and creates a social bureaucracy and that is ,in my opinion, the last thing we need.

I'm fine with it, Shea, as long as they show talent. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that they didn't join for social reasons, of any kind.

Well said. I wasn't there on Thursday, so I'm not sure who said what you're referring to, but I'm sorry that it was said. We all do need to remember that we are one staff and arrogance is corrosive. I for one am very excited about having an even more dynamic and energetic staff.

I at least know of most of the people that joined, and I'm sure they will only make our paper greater. The only feeling i have towards our new "recruits" is a feeling of excitement! we have minds to mold....WOOT!

Oh, and by the way, I do agree with you Shea, as well as Kyle and Cassie. And I personally don't know who you're referring to specifically either, but I think the majority of people on the staff have a positive consensus regarding the new members. Also, anyone who may have said something negative may have been misunderstood and weren't as negative as they were perceived to be, or are regretting their comments. As for me, I am very glad and enthusiastic to have all the new people this semester. I said I was surprised by the number of new people and that it would probably cause even more squeezing of articles...but good thing we have this blog then, right?!

Thanks for your post Shea!
